Shirley Battrick
I am a potter living and working in Mudgeeraba on the Gold Coast. I have lived and studied pottery in the United States and am a graduate of ANU School of Art. My current work looks at domesticity through the use of the tradition domestic earthenware and is reflected in the serving/ receiving forms of pourers and bowls. I have used a variety of decorative techniques to tell a story. With these works I am looking at the marital relationship with a particular emphasis on domestic violence.
'Showtime' - the face we show the world that hides the reality of abuse beneath.
'Then and Now' - the words of victims and the everyday images examine the past and the future - abuse and escape.
'Free to Dream' - the bright, happy colours and images of freedom and personal growth.
