These classes are for relaxation and fun, our students escape from the outside world for a few hours. First the students are taught how to handle clay by slab, coil and wheel. Our emphasis is on teaching the student to make what they want; sometimes this can be very daunting, we all learn from our mistakes, and the beauty of clay as a medium is it’s adaptability. We don’t have fully structured classes as the more serious ceramic schools do; no exams, we are a hobby school of pottery.
At our school we use about six different clays and the glaze recipes are made up by us to fit those clays at the temperatures we fire to. This gives the students a good selection for their finished pots. This also saves the students having to worry too much about the technical side of the art. If they want more technical information we can give them that too, but most are happy to work within the parameters of the classroom, some do get keen enough to purchase their own wheel for at home practice, but stop short of the expense of a kiln, happy to have their work fired by the teachers. We have a comprehensive library they are welcome to use while in class. Many students become active members of the Association and participate in their activities.
